Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery

Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery

(Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery department) was established in Ibn Al-Haytham hospital in 1996, and was equipped with modern medical devices, soon afterwards a catheterization laboratory was inaugurated and furnished according to international standards. Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery department consists of:

* Cardiology outpatient clinics: they are dedicated to examining patients and conducting initial assessments and tests for them.

* Non-invasive Cardiology laboratory: where the following tests are performed:

- Electrocardiogram (ECG): it is done for both in- patients and out-patients.

- Echocardiography (Echo): it is performed using ultrasound waves to create images of the heart.

- Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE): which is a heart examination performed through the esophagus using ultrasound waves.

- The Treadmill Stress Test (TMT): which is a cardiac examination performed to evaluate how the heart responds to physical activity. During the test, the patient is asked to walk or run on a treadmill while being closely monitored. This test helps assess the heart's functionality and overall cardiovascular health.

Moreover, the lab has (Signal Averaged ECG), which is a modern and highly accurate device that is used to conduct essential non-invasive tests needed for identifying patients at risk of developing serious ventricular arrhythmias.

* Cardiac Catheterization and Coronary Angiography Unit.

(Cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography unit) was inaugurated in 1997. Recognizing the importance of catheterization in diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, and the impact of interventional treatments performed through catheterization on saving patients' lives and alleviating their pain, the administration of Ibn Al-Haytham hospital has equipped the department with the latest and most advanced catheterization device, the Allure CV20 Philips, which is known of its exceptional medical and technical features, such as having a 3D system for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases, particularly arterial and cerebral vascular diseases, as well as peripheral artery diseases.

The following procedures are conducted in (cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography unit):

- Diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases through balloon angioplasty and stent implantation.

- Diagnosing and treating heart valves’ diseases and congenital heart defects in both children and adults through balloon valvuloplasty and closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects using specialized catheter-based techniques.

- Diagnosing and treating diseases of the cerebral arteries and blood vessels through catheter-based interventions, such as placing supportive stents within cerebral arteries, coiling to close cerebral aneurysms, and treating and closing vascular malformations in the brain, such as AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) embolization.

- Diagnostic studying of cardiac electrophysiology and treatment of tachycardia through renal denervation.

- Insertion of temporary and permanent pacemakers, and implantation of cardiac support devices.

- Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) through endovascular stent graft placement.

- Diagnosis and treatment of lower extremity arteries’ blockage through therapeutic drug-coated balloon angioplasty or by using a special device to remove atherosclerotic plaques from the peripheral arteries.

* Cardiac and Coronary Artery Surgery.

The hospital possesses extensive expertise in treating cardiovascular diseases using the latest surgical techniques and interventions, including open-heart surgeries for coronary artery bypass grafting. Additionally, the department performs mitral valve repair using endoscopic methods, providing an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. Moreover, heart valve replacements and surgeries for congenital heart diseases in both children and adults are also conducted in the hospital.
